Well we are in the midst of ‘awards season’ including the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, and of course the Oscars.  And with several entries this year showcasing the talents of exceptionally talented men of color, I was particularly interested in seeing how these nominated thespians would dress for the various shows.  The first of these, the Golden Globes occurred on Sunday January 12th, and I was a bit disappointed in one of my favorite actors, Idris Elba.

He was nominated for not one, but two Golden Globes (Best Actor in a Motion Picture for “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”, and Best Actor in a Mini-series or TV Movie for “Luther”.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that his British counterpart, Chiwetel Ejiofor, pulled off the same dual-nomination feat (Best Actor in a Motion Picture for “12 Years A Slave, and Best Actor in a Mini-series or TV Movie for “Dancing on the Edge).”

Idris Elba wore a very nice one-button, peak lapel tuxedo, that fit the proportions of his 6’4″ frame to perfection, but he opted out of wearing a bow tie or necktie to a traditionally formal, high visibility, black-tie event.  He knows how to wear his clothes, so he still pulled it off, but it wasn’t an appropriate look for the occasion.  My point in all of this is, although rules are made to be broken, and although personal style is one of the leading factors in breaking fashion rules, sometimes you really need to ‘tow-the-line’.  “Black Tie means black tie!  Additionally, a word to the wise gentlemen, you and your date should NEVER look as if you are going to two totally different events!

I recently saw Mr. Elba in an interview with Oprah Winfrey where he explained that he has always considered himself a movie actor, but with this latest film, and the recognition he has received for his portrayal of the late Nelson Mandela, people now view him as a ‘movie star’.  I pray that his publicist and stylist both got a good scolding for this “tie-less” look, and that Mr. Elba understands that he IS a movie star…. Now act and look the part when its called upon to do so, and continued success my brother.  Your fans, present party included, are thoroughly enjoying watching your star continue to rise.
